Speculation on Next Years’ Entries

Written by spiller. Posted in Misc

So the interest in next year’s contest in Germany is growing. According to Oikiotimes 14 countries have confirmed their entry for the Eurovision Song Contest 2011.

  • Belgium
  • Cyprus
  • Denmark
  • Estonia
  • Finland
  • Germany
  • Greece
  • Romania
  • Spain
  • Sweden
  • Malta
  • Turkey
  • Ukraine
  • Azerbaijan

Andorra have confirmed that they will again be sitting out of the contest due to financial issues.

A number of countries have made noises about possible returning to the competition. Hungary could be represented by Duna TV after taking over the broadcast from Magyar Televízió.

Austria too is making noises about a possible return after a three year break as it is being hosted by their neighbour according to Der Standard (german)

Liechtenstein is also looking at making its debut next year as its national broadcaster 1FLTV is applying for EBU membership.

It will be interesting to see if Italy, Luxembourg, San Marino, Czech Republic and Montenegro return next year.

With the poor performance by Slovakia I doubt we will see them again, along with the Czech republic things have not gone swimingly for them. Also given Lithuania's grumblings about payment and non performance we won't see them either. This year I have a good feeling about Italy, one of the big 4 has won it, it's a good sign.

i thought Austria was out of the question since they didn't broadcast the final (they showed "Musikantenstadel" instead – don't google this, it's pure horror). But, as i consulted the rules you linked in another post, the rule that one has to broadcast last years final to participate must have been deleted some time in the past…

I'd love to see Italy back – and I'd love to see Morocco, as it would give another color. Hungary? is it likely, after their government went into a strange direction?

I think if Britain wants to do well next year then they need to send an established singer not some teenager from a reality show (sorry Josh). They did well when they sent in Sonia and won with Katrina and the waves. I think someone like Dina Carroll would be for them a perfect year. (get it perfect year, lol)

    Martin B,

You would be correct, the rule about broadcasting the final is no longer in effect. I think its because the contest can now handle 45 entries that there is no need for a limiting clause.

Remember entries are not chosen by Governments but by the broadcaster. And Fidesz are quite mainstream. They are the sister party of the CDU though the EPP, a Party to which I belong. (As well as an ESC Nerd im a Politics Nerd)

    Frank,

You may be correct on Slovakia! If they pull out, the Czechs will stay out. Im hoping for the Italians to re-enter. Then it will be the big five!

    Stephen,

You are sooo right about the UK, but we used to do the same!
